Pro Football Hall of Famer Darrell Green attends U.S. flag football national team trials

Darrell Green, a Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback who played from 1983 to 2002, is participating in trials for the U.S. men's flag football national team in Chula Vista, California.[1][2] The 64-year-old qualified through a digital combine and impressed USA Football staff with his testing results.[1]

Green, selected 28th overall in the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins out of Texas A&M-Kingsville, spent his entire 20-year career with the franchise, now known as the Washington Commanders.[3][4] He recorded 54 career interceptions, including six returned for touchdowns, and contributed to victories in Super Bowl XXII and Super Bowl XXVI.[3][4] Green was selected to seven Pro Bowls and earned first-team All-Pro honors four times. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008.[4]

The trials, which began this week, aim to identify candidates for the national team's training camp next month and potential roster spots for the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championship.[1][2] Flag football is set to debut as an Olympic sport at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.[5]

"He’s later in his career than the other trials participants, but his testing results were impressive," said Callie Brownson, USA Football’s senior director of high performance and national teams. "Our coaches and staff felt he deserved a closer look."[1] Green told USA Football, "I’m going to give it my best and I’ll walk away with my head up, either way."[1]

The U.S. men's flag football team has won six of the last seven IFAF World Championships since 2010.[6] Approximately 100 men and women are competing in the trials, including former WNBA player Loryn Goodwin.[1]
