Prior to this victory, the WBC -- held every four years and organized by Major League Baseball and the World Baseball Softball Confederation -- had been won by Japan (2009, 2023), the Dominican Republic (2006, 2013) and the United States (2017).[1][3]
Venezuela advanced to the final after a semifinal win over Italy on March 16 at the same venue, which hosted the tournament's late stages including semifinals on March 16-17 and the final.[2]
Eduardo Rodriguez, a 33-year-old left-handed pitcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks, started for Venezuela and pitched 4.1 innings, allowing one hit -- a single to Brice Turang of the Milwaukee Brewers -- while recording four strikeouts, including two against U.S. captain Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees.[4][5]
Venezuela took a 2-0 lead by the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Maikel Garcia of the Kansas City Royals in the third and a solo home run by Wilyer Abreu of the Boston Red Sox in the fifth. The United States starter was Nolan McLean.[4][6]

Daniel Palencia of the Chicago Cubs closed out the bottom of the ninth for Venezuela, striking out Kyle Schwarber and Roman Anthony while Gunnar Henderson popped out, securing the win.[4]
