President Donald Trump on Thursday condemned Iran's execution of 19-year-old freestyle wrestler Saleh Mohammadi during an interview on Fox News' "The Five."[1]
"About two weeks ago, they put out a notice that if you protest, we will shoot you. They kill them. Look what they did to the wrestler. They killed him for speaking up," Trump said. He described Mohammadi as "a star wrestler, a great wrestler, actually" and one of Iran's best who spoke against the regime.[1]
Iranian state media-affiliated Mizan news agency reported that Mohammadi was hanged publicly earlier this month along with Mehdi Ghasemi and Saeed Davoudi after conviction for killing two police officers during nationwide protests. Iran International cited the report.[1]
Mohammadi, who expressed a dream of becoming an Olympic champion in an interview with Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, won a bronze medal for Iran in freestyle wrestling at the Saytiyev International Cup in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, in September 2024.[1]
The execution drew mourning from U.S. Olympians including gold medalist wrestlers Brandon Slay (2000) and swimmers and bobsledders. The International Olympic Committee expressed concern over mistreatment of athletes but noted limitations as a non-governmental organization unable to influence sovereign nations' laws.[1]
